  • one social issues I want to might focus on is environmental racism I would want to focus on this topic because a big issues in the book is how mama and her family were being kicked out because white people were started to movies in there area and making their home more expensive for them to live there
  • with the environmental racism issue it was unfair for them to be kicked out for living there just because more wealthier people were moving in and they weren't as wealthy as those moving in 
  • another social issue is black nationalism 
  • this topic is interesting to me because it based off how African Americans appear to look like during that time to society 
  • black nationalism shows how people thought African Americans dressed, lived, decorated their home, styled their appearance etc. 
  • another social issue is gender norms
  • I thinking of picking gender norms because it was interesting to me that in the book the way they see ruth as a woman who is trying to become a doctor and during that time it was extremely had for women especially to become educated and become a doctor
  • people didn't expect any women to try to become a doctor or anything that was considered not for women to do 
  • also how women are the ones who stay home and take care of the children and men are the ones who go out and work and provide for their families is the way society saw how women and men household are supposed to be like

Bell Hooks

In my opinion I feel that race, gender, class, and sexual orientation is not an important thing to know about the authors I will be reading in school.  When Bell Hooks says " Th at   white world made me doubt myself. And in the space of that doubt I needed proof that they were all wrong—that there are great writers who happened to be black, just as my beloved Emily Dickinson happened to be white." When she said this I thought to myself that she meant that everyone is equal and the same as white people in  writing. That it didn't matter if you were a African American or white writer because you could be a great writer no matter what race you are.
