Dear Beli

Dear Beli,
How did you feel about Trujillo being the dictator of your country and the way he handled things when people didn’t follow him?  Based on what I read on page 83 I believe she would say she would be afraid to speak up about her rights because of what he does to those who don’t agree/ follow him.  The footnotes talks about the Mirabal sisters and how they were murdered because “ these beautiful sisters from Salcedo… resisted Trujillo…” These women were murdered because they “ don’t take shit from nobody, not even Trujillo.” After their death it was a sign for other people that this is the “official beginning of the end of the Trujillato, the “tipping point” when folks decided enough was enough.”
How did you feel about raising your soon to be child during the time Trujillo was the dictator? Based on the footnotes I read on page 157 I believe you would say your scared and anxious about it because you wouldn’t feel safe. In the footnotes on page 157 it says how the Mirabal sisters were killed in the canefields. “After all, they killed the world famous Mirabal sisters, who were of name; what was to stop them from killing her poor orphaned negrita? La Lnca felt the danger palpably, intimately.” From that you can see how terrified Belis mom was so I can believe that Beli was even more scared than her mom.
Sincerely,

Jesenia Arzaga
